Why I Advocate For Gender Equality – Tems

Tems, a popular singer from Nigeria, had a really interesting moment at the Global Citizen Festival in Ghana when she discussed why she consistently advocates for gender equality. The hosts questioned Tems about why she consistently advocates for gender equality in her songs and podcast while the audience applauded. In response, the singer stated that she supports gender equality because not enough opportunities are provided for women. She continued by saying that if she could provide more chances and possibilities for women, she would. Tems said, “We don’t get enough chances. Women need more chances, women need more opportunities in this world. And if I can give it, why not. “I feel if you love someone you show them off. GET TO KNOW ALL NIGERIAN PRESIDENTS/HEAD OF STATE SINCE 1960

Nigeria gained her Independence on October 1st 1960 and became a republic in 1963. Since Independence till now, Nigeria has been ruled by several presidents and military head of states. Let us get to know a bit about them when they where in power.


Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa: The only leader in the history of Nigeria to have the title of prime minister and one of those that fought for the independence of Nigeria. He was killed in a bloody military coup in January 1966 and this led to many turns of events in the country. Today his face is on Nigerians 5 Naira notes.

President Nnamdi Azikiwe: From 1960 to 1963, Dr. Azikiwe  was the governor general of the federation until 1963 when Nigeria fully cut ties with her British colonial masters to become a republic. Nmadi Azikiwe became the first President of Nigeria. He was however removed in a bloody Military coup in January  1966


General Johnson Aguiyi Ironsi: In 1966 became the first Military head of State in Nigeria. He was handed this position after he squashed the Military coup attempt of January 1966. He was also killed in a counter coup in July 1966.

General Yakubu Gowon: He was chosen to be the Head of State after Aguiyi Ironsi. He was formerly the Army Chief of staff then. His regime experienced the first civil war in Nigeria popularly known as the Biafran war, which started in 1967 and ended 1970. In 1975, General Yakubu  was removed from office in a military coup d'etat.


General Murtala Mohammed: He plotted the coup that removed General Gowon from office and wanted to bring sanity back to the military and also to hand over power to a democratically elected prresident but was assassinated in 1976 in a failed coup d'etat headed by Major Dimka. Many Nigerians believed he was one of the best military rulers in the history of  Nigeria.


General Olusegun Obasanjo: In 1976, General Obasanjo who was the equivalent to a vice president to General Murtala  became the Head of State in Nigeria. He executed the coup plotters and also handed  the affairs of the country to a democratically elected president in August 1979.


Alhaji Shehu Shagari: 1979 became the 2nd republic for Nigeria. After 13 years of military rule, a democratically elected President finally came into power. Shagari Presidency will famously be known for the "Ghana must go" era. On December 31st 1983, the military came back and took over power.


General Muhammadu Buhari: He brought Nigeria back to military rule and will be known for his stern fight against corruption and indiscipline. He was kicked out of office in a bloodless military coup d'etat in August 1985.

General Ibrahim  Babangida: He was the Army chief of staff to General Buhari before he took power for himself. General Babangida's regime survived a bloody coup attempt lead by Major Gideon Orka. General Babangida later changed the capital of Nigeria from Lagos to Abuja. In August 1993, due to pressure, General Babangida stepped down from power and handed over to an interim government he formed.

Ernest Shonekan: In August 1993 became the first Interim President of Nigeria and by November of the same year he was overthrown.

General Sani Abacha: In November 1993 took over power and became one of the most feared President in the history of Nigeria. He however died in the presidential villa on 8th June 1998.


Major General Abdulsalami  Abubakar: Became the head of state of Nigeria in 1998 after the demise of General Abacha. On 29th May 1999, Major General Abubakar stepped down and handed power to a democratic elected government. 

Olusegun Obasanjo: Elected into power in May 1999 became the first person to rule Nigeria as a military head and a civilian head. The constitution stipulated a two term tenure of four years each. Obasanjo completed his eight year rule and handed over in May 2007.

Alhaji Umaru Yar' Adua: Elected into power in May 2007 but died on the 5th of May 2010.

Goodluck Jonathan: Was the vice to President Yar'Adua and was sworn in on the 6th of May 2010 to become the president of Nigeria. He completed the tenure of Yar'Adua and ran for presidency in 2011 and won it. He lost out in the next election in 2015.

Muhammadu Buhari: In 2015, the former Military head of state, became the second citizen after Obasanjo to become both a military and civilian ruler of Nigeria. He won the election for his 2nd term in  office and he is still the current president of Nigeria till 2023 when he is expected to hand over power to the next elected leader.
